(Brooklyn, OH) - A political icon in Cuyahoga County for generations has passed away. John Coyne, 97, served as the mayor of Brooklyn for 51 years. His first term commencing in 1948.
Coyne's is the longest serving mayor in the country's history for consecutive terms.
Under Coyne's leadership, Brooklyn became the first city in the United States to adopt motor vehicle laws which are now widely enforced: Mandatory seat belt use and a ban on the use of a cellphone while driving.
He was a influential voice in the local democratic party for many years.
